1. What are cookies?
A cookie is a file that is downloaded to your computer when you visit certain websites. Cookies allow a website, among other things, to store and retrieve information about a user’s or their device’s browsing habits, and, depending on the information they contain and how the device is used, they can be used to recognize the user.
Depending on which entity manages the domain from which the cookies are sent and processes the data obtained, there are two types of cookies: first-party cookies and third-party cookies. There is also a second classification based on how long they remain stored in the user’s browser; these can be session cookies or persistent cookies. Finally, there is another classification with five types of cookies based on the purpose for which the collected data is processed: technical cookies, personalization cookies, analytics cookies, advertising cookies, and behavioral advertising cookies.
2. What types of cookies can be used on a website?
As outlined in the AEPD’s “Guide on the Use of Cookies,” depending on the entity that manages the cookies, we can distinguish between:
First-party cookies: These are cookies that are sent to the user's device from a server or domain managed by the publisher itself and from which the service requested by the user is provided.
Third-party cookies: These are cookies that are sent to the user's device from a server or domain that is not managed by the publisher, but rather by another entity that processes the data collected through the cookies.
Furthermore, as outlined in the AEPD’s “Guide on the Use of Cookies,” depending on the purpose for which the data collected through cookies is processed, we can distinguish between:
Technical cookies: These are cookies that allow the user to navigate a website, platform, or application and use the various options or services available there, such as controlling traffic and data communication, identifying the session, accessing restricted-access areas, remember the items in an order, complete the purchase process for an order, submit a registration or participation request for an event, use security features while browsing, store content for the streaming of videos or audio, or share content via social media.
Personalization cookies: These are cookies that allow the user to access the service with certain general settings predefined based on a series of criteria on the user’s device, such as language, the type of browser used to access the service, the regional settings from which the service is accessed, etc.
Analytics cookies: These are cookies that allow the party responsible for them to track and analyze the behavior of users on the websites to which they are linked. The information collected through these cookies is used to measure the activity on websites, applications, or platforms and to create user navigation profiles for those sites, applications, and platforms, with the aim of making improvements based on the analysis of how users interact with the service.
Advertising cookies: These cookies enable the most effective management possible of the advertising spaces that the publisher may have included on a website, app, or platform through which it provides the requested service, based on criteria such as the content published or the frequency with which ads are displayed.
Behavioral advertising cookies: These cookies enable the most effective management of any advertising spaces that the publisher may have included on a website, app, or platform through which the requested service is provided. These cookies store information about user behavior obtained through the continuous monitoring of their browsing habits, which allows for the creation of a specific profile to display advertising based on that behavior.
Finally, as outlined in the AEPD’s “Guide on the Use of Cookies,” depending on how long they remain active, we can distinguish between:
Session cookies: These are cookies designed to collect and store data while the user is accessing a website. They are typically used to store information that needs to be retained only for the purpose of providing the service requested by the user on a one-time basis (for example, a list of purchased products) and are deleted at the end of the session.
Persistent cookies: These are cookies in which the data remains stored on the device and can be accessed and processed for a period defined by the party responsible for the cookie, which can range from a few minutes to several years.
